Duroflex

Asphalt Additive Duroflex(R) – improves significantly road lifetime

Duroflex is a free-flowing additive. Duroflex improves the properties of asphalt concrete or stone matrix asphalt significantly already at the metering stage. Its use improves the load bearing capacity of roads and motorways (reducing ruts) in periods of high temperatures in summer timme, and increases the resistance to the formation of cold cranks in winter time.

Duroflex is a multi-component system, predominantly consisting of a variety of polymers and fibres. In addition, Duroflex contains protective substances (inhibitors) which protect the polymer components against ageing through the adverse effects of UV light and the oxygen in the air. In this way, the benefits of Duroflex remain in the asphalt for a considerable period of time.

Duroflex is made from recycled material in plants which are monitored for quality and certified in accordance with ISO 9001. Thanks to the proportion of fibres, Duroflex can also be used to modify SMA without any additional fibres or other stabilising additives. This prevents the hot bitumen from dripping from the hot grit, so that the thick film of bitumen remains intact, both in transit and during the processing of the asphalt. Due to the assured preservation of a thick film of bitumen covering the minerals, Duroflex asphalts possess significantly improved water resistance. For regions subject to temperatures above 35 °C and heavy rainfalls, in particular, this property is of considerable importance by contributing to prolonging the intervals between road and motorway repairs.

Duroflex can be direktly introduced into the asphalt mixing plant in metered amounts. Premixing of the bitumen with Duroflex is not required. By this means, plant cost savings gan be achieved and energy consumption is reduced.

Depending on the roperties of the used bitumen, the load bearing category of the road or motorway, and the type of asphalt in use, the volume of Duroflex is 0.2 – 0.8 % by weight, relative to the asphalt.

Due to the special functional qualities of Duroflex it is possible to re-use any asphalt, derived from the repair of roads and motorways, for the production of high- strength, high-quality asphalt.

The modification of asphalt concrete or SMA with Duroflex enables levels of durability to be achieved which are superior to those of other additives, such as SBS. In the German test for the formation of ruts, the asphalt testing layer is heated with hot water. As a result, this test procedure allows not only the long-term stability of the asphalt (resistance to rutting) to be predicted, but also the water resistance of the Duroflex asphalt to be checked at the same time.

with SBS); Penetration: 2,5 … 3,5 mm
5 = standard bitumen B 50/70 „Duroflex.“ modified
Penetration: 1,5 … 2,5 mm

Advantages and benefits of Duroflex:

  • Improved load carrying capacity and service life of roads and traffic surfaces under summer and winter conditions.
  • Noticeable reduction of ruts and stress cracks.
  • Increased traffic safety due to use of polishing resistant minerals in wearing course.
  • Use of cost-profitable and easy to process road bitumen (instead of polymer modified bitumen, lower processing and spreading temperature).
  • Use of cost-profitable minerals, or use of recycled mineral materials, substitution of asphalt concrete for stone matrix asphalt.
  • Storage and use of two basic kinds of bitumen only, thus reducing investment expenditures (equipment) and energy costs.
  • Improved resistance to the formation of ruts in asphalts in summer time.
  • Improvement at cold weather behaviour of asphalts in winter time (avoidance of cold cracks).
  • Significant improvement in water resistance of asphalts.
  • High potential for modification and, as a result, variation in the quantity used from 0.2% to 0.8% by weight, depending on the stress category of the road/motorway.
  • Cost-effective and environmentally compatible, thanks to the use of recycled material.
  • Easy to use and guaranteed to be successful.
  • Automatically or manually metering.
  • Guaranteed storage life of more than two years (in dry storage).
  • High proportion of old asphalt that can be re-used (recycled).
  • Direct metering into the asphalt mixing plant leading to savings in energy costs.
  • No premixing or storage of hot (modified) bitumen is required.
  • Investment expenditure is reduced, since only one type of bitumen is required and, as a result, only one bitumen storage tank.
  • No stabilising additives (e.g. cellulose fibres) are necessary for the production of stone mastic asphalt.

All Duroflex ingredients are in fine powder. This means that they are evenly distributed in the asphalt, ensuring full effectiveness. Duroflex now also comes in pellets of different diameters, allowing them to be processed faster and more accurately by all commercially available dosing plants and dosing technologies. On request, Duroflex can also be delivered with additional components to make the modified asphalt even more resistant to cold.
